Historical Background

Born on February 14, 1953, in Montreal, Quebec, Gilbert Jean Marco Brulé was destined to be part of a family with strong ties to ice hockey. His father, Henri Richard, and his uncle, Maurice 'Rocket' Richard, were both legends in the sport.

The Event

After an impressive career in junior hockey, Brulé made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut with the Montreal Canadiens on October 8, 1975. He went on to play a total of 803 games over 14 seasons, scoring 168 goals and 275 assists.

Why This Moment Mattered

Brulé's career was not just about numbers. He played a pivotal role in the Canadiens' victory in the 1976 Stanley Cup Final, scoring the series-clinching goal against the Boston Bruins. This moment solidified his place in Canadian hockey history.

Lasting Impact

Brulé retired from professional hockey in 1989. However, his legacy continues to live on. He was inducted into the Montreal Canadiens Hall of Honour in 1995 and the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. His name is synonymous with Canadian ice hockey excellence.

Historical Background

The Gregorian Calendar, the one we predominantly use today, was introduced in October 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to replace the Julian Calendar. But, did you know that the first day of the year according to this new calendar wasn't always January 1?

The Event

Initially, the Gregorian Calendar marked January 1 as the start of the year only in the year 1583. However, on January 1, 1700, there was a slight anomaly. Due to a quirk in the calculation, no year zero was accounted for, which meant that the calendar skipped the year! This peculiarity was later corrected.

Why This Moment Mattered

The change of the first day of the year had significant implications. For one, it adjusted the length of the year from 365.25 days to a more accurate 365.2425 days, by removing three leap years every 400 years. This correction brought the calendar in line with the astronomical year and improved its predictive accuracy.

Lasting Impact

Today, we celebrate January 1 as New Year's Day without giving a second thought to the complexities behind it. The adjustments made to the calendar continue to ensure that our timekeeping remains relatively precise, enabling us to mark and plan events effectively throughout the year.
